Beating a Block

So something I've learned during my writing experience is that writers block happens to the best and worst of us. It's something that we can't get out of *unless you are a super genius when it comes to writing in which case you're fired* but it is something that you can beat. It's kind of like getting a cold actually.

When you get a cold the first thing you want is to be free from the snotty, yucky feelings you have. Similarly when you have a block, the first thing you want to do is get out of it. You are wanting to find a way to move the yuck in your body (or the mental yuck) out and to be able to breathe(or write) freely again. A cold is treatable by medicines like NyQuil and DayQuil to help fight the symptoms you are experiencing, but mostly you have to flush it out. (And unfortunately with writers block there's no easy treatment plan, but it can be flushed out).

So how do we flush out a block that comes. It's something that takes concentration on not only the part of the author, but also the part of the characters they are trying to write (please don't think I'm crazy, characters have a lot to do with writing). The flushing of the system comes by immersing yourself in the screen (if you're typing), or the pen. Making yourself stay at the computer for whatever length of time it takes to get out of the block is the only way to truly defeat the monster.

A Writerly Start

I thought as an aspiring author that it would be a good idea to have a blog dedicated to books. Ones I've read, ones I want to read, and ones that I'm working on writing. I think learning about different writing styles is a good thing, so I will include some of the tricks of the trade I've learned through my own experience as well as have things up here to help not only aspiring authors, but also to do some writing on my own a little each day.

Some of tools that I've found most important as I've endeavored to pen (or type, let's be honest, most of it goes onto a hard drive) varying different texts is to just let what comes come. It's not necessarily important to have people to go to, but just to let your thoughts flow from your mind onto the medium of recording device you have available.

The reason for the blog-title, Devious Delights, is because reading, writing, and even critiquing other's work is an inspiring thing for me and something that brings me joy.

I hope this blog can help other authors like myself in their journey. I'll hopefully be able to post once a month.

Ciao!
